WASHINGTON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The trial is getting underway for a Chicago Police officer and his sister, charged with breaching the US Capitol building on January 6 of 2021.

Karol and Agnieszka Chwiesiuk are the first among about forty Illinois residents charged with taking part in the riot to be tried in front of a jury.

Both rejected plea deals.

Federal prosecutors said the two were caught on surveillance video and they took selfies.

The officer, who’s been on unpaid leave since the charges were filed about two years ago, is alleged to have sent a friend a text message that said, "Knocked out a commie last night. Don't tell."

He was seen in a CPD hoodie.

"He was exercising his First Amendment rights, and he recognizes that perhaps breaching the steps of the Capitol went a little too far. He did not engage in any violence," Karol Chwiesiuk’s attorney Tim Grace said.
