COOK COUNTY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Three Chicago men face criminal charges after being tracked down in a stolen car by Cook County Sheriff’s officers.
19-year-old Imarion Dobbs of 63rd and Aretsian, has been charged with felony illegal gun possession as well as entering/operating a stolen car, which is a misdemeanor. Meanwhile, 23-year-old Lajon Hayes of 34th and King Drive and 19-year-old Leterrance Mitchell of 70th Place and Crandon have both been charged with entering/operating a stolen car.
The Cook County Sheriff’s Office said the three were apprehended late Monday night. The trio, driving in a 2022 Gray Chevrolet Malibu, fled from a traffic stop at 79th and the Dan Ryan Expressway. Sheriff’s officers working as a part of the Chicago Police Vehicular Taskforce were able to track the Mailbu thanks to a Department of Homeland Security helicopter, also a part of the taskforce.
Officers eventually caught up to the Malibu near DuSable Lakeshore Drive and Lower Wacker Drive, but when they approached they discovered the car abandoned and witnessed the driver get into a 2018 Blue Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV. Authorities said the SUV jumped the median and recklessly sped southbound on Lakeshore Drive.
The SUV, investigators eventually learned, was reported stolen in the city.
The taskforce helicopter once again tracked the suspects, and officers soon found the SUV in a parking garage on Ashland near Ogden. The three men attempted to flee from the car but were caught by police.
Officers recovered a loaded handgun with a switch from Dobbs’ waistband, and a second gun with an extended magazine was found by Chicago police near the scene. Sheriff’s officers also found bags of cannabis and scales from the SUV.
On Wednesday, Dobbs’ bond was set at $25,000.
The investigation remains ongoing.
