CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An argument in Greater Grand Crossing Monday afternoon turned deadly for someone who wasn’t even involved.
Chicago Police said two men were arguing near 71st and State at about 6:15 p.m. when one of them shot the other in the leg.
CPD Deputy Chief Don Jerome told reporters another armed man got involved.
“A third-party that was on scene then exchanged gunfire with the original offender and appears to have struck that offender. That third-party is not in custody nor identified,” Jerome said.
When it was over, police said two people who are believed to be innocent bystanders were wounded.
A 59-year-old man died at the hospital after being hit in the stomach, and a 49-year-old man was listed initially in grave condition with a gunshot wound to the head.
Police, who were brought to the area by a Shotspotter alert, found a suspect inside a Subway restaurant with a leg wound. He was arrested, but, as the deputy chief said, police are still looking for the other shooter.
A fourth person later showed up at a hospital, also with a leg wound, Jerome said.
