CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago City Council Zoning Committee is recommending that the full Council designate two new cultural landmarks in the city Wednesday.

Matt Crawford, with the Department of Planning and Development described the first of the structures to win the Zoning committee's blessing.
The committee was asked to designate as landmarks the giant metal flags of Puerto Rico marking Paseo Boricua to the delight of Alderman Roberto Maldonado.

It's a matter of Puerto Rican Pride and "another means to continue the struggle to slow down gentrification", he said. The vote was unanimous.

And on the South Side, the Committee approved landmark designation for Monumental Baptist Church, where the pastor is Cleophus Lee.

He said the Baptist Church on East Oakwood Boulevard is 103 years old and is one of Chicago's historic churches. Planning Department Architectural Historian Matt Crawford presented the recommendation.

"The commission found that the building meets criteria for designation for its architecture, but even more so for its long heritage as a place of cultural and social uplift in Bronzeville."

The vote was unanimous as well.
