CHANNAHON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Southbound I-55 in Will County has reopened after being shutdown for over seven hours due to two overturned cargo semis.
It caused quite the traffic headache for drivers. All lanes of southbound I-55, from I-80 to U.S. Route 6, near Channahon, were closed. There was no access to I-55 from I-80 nor could you get onto I-55 from U.S. Route 59 either.
The incident occurred at around 5:30 a.m., Illinois State Police said. Two cargo semis, one hauling bottled water, the other carrying soybeans, tipped over. The result was an absolute mess, with tons of water bottles and soybeans spread across the highway. In addition, ISP said the trucks were leaking fuel. There was 1 minor injury in the accident.
As of about 6:45 a.m., there was a four mile backup. The clean up lasted for over 7 hours, concluding at around 12:45 p.m.
