
(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- As part of a new transportation infrastructure program, the Biden administration is awarding two Illinois recipients grants to help with improvements.
The grants are two of 80 projects nationwide to strengthen surface-transportation systems and making them more resilient to extreme weather events worsened by climate change.
The U.S. Department of Transportation said the two Illinois recipients will get $9 million dollars. The funding includes over $8.6 million dollars to upgrade sewers along Harrison Street to reduce flooding on I-290 to protect nearby properties in Maywood awarded to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
“Every community in America knows the impacts of climate change and extreme weather, including increasingly frequent heavy rain and flooding events across the country and the sea-level rise that is inundating infrastructure in coastal states,” said Federal Highway Administration Administrator Shailen Bhatt.
“This investment from the Biden-Harris Administration will ensure our infrastructure is built to withstand more frequent and unpredictable extreme weather, which is vitally important for people and businesses that rely on roads and bridges being open to keep our economy moving
The Champaign County Regional Planning Commission will receive $380,000 to study the vulnerability of transportation infrastructure during severe weather.
