SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The University of Illinois-Springfield is waiving tuition and fees for qualifying students as part of a new initiative.
The Springfield campus of the University of Illinois is rolling out the “Prairie Promise," a waiver of tuition and fees for qualifying students.
In addition to qualifying for the Monetary Award Program grants, UIS vice chancellor for enrollment and retention management Vickie Cook said that qualifying students also need to be a first-year, first-time undergraduate student enrolled in an on-campus degree program.
"This particular program will help provide access to a Bachelor's degree for students, who may have not had the opportunity to even think they might be able to afford a Bachelor's degree," she added.
Cook said the university researched the numbers of students who are and are not going to college – and who are and are not going to college in Illinois.
