SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WBBM Newsradio) – Tenure and tenure-track faculty at the University of Illinois Springfield have suspended an 11-day strike after reaching a tentative agreement with the university, union officials said.

Professors returned to the classroom Monday while members of the University of Illinois Springfield United Faculty review the proposed deal and prepare to vote later this week. University administrators will also need to approve the agreement before it can take effect.

Union leaders said the decision to pause the strike was driven by concern for students, with final exams and graduation approaching. The walkout had disrupted instruction for nearly two weeks.

Details of the tentative agreement have not been released and will remain confidential until both sides complete the ratification process.

The UIS United Faculty represents about 145 tenure and tenure-track professors at the Springfield campus. The group is affiliated with the University Professionals of Illinois, which represents more than 3,500 faculty and staff across several of the state’s public universities.
