The state’s flagship university is growing again.

Enrollment at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign now tops 61,000 students thanks to a freshman class that grew to 9,332.

That’s about 200 more students, based on numbers from the tenth day of classes.

Sara MacKenzie, executive director for Undergraduate Admissions, says they saw a dip in the number of international students due in part to challenges obtaining visas.

70% of freshmen are in-state, coming from 92 of Illinois’ 102 counties.

Almost one in four is a first-generation college student.

The University of Illinois Chicago is also seeing record enrollment this year with 37,199 total students.

Meanwhile, Illinois State University erased its record high from last year.

The student body of 21,577 is still above enrollment in 2024.
