(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — If your Christmas tree is dim because of a bad bulb, a local company has a tool to fix it — without having to redecorate.

Ulta-Lit Tree Company estimates it has saved 12 million light sets from the trash over the 26 years it’s been operating.

Founder and President John DeCosmo said their repair tool allows people to continue to use lights that have been passed down in their families.

“Remove any one bulb from a non-functional light set,” DeCosmo said. “Insert the tool. Pull the trigger, sometimes up to 30 times. THe majority of all light sets will come on before your eyes.”

The Glenview-based company also makes separate tools for incandescent and LED light strands, but DeCosmo said incandescent lights have a shelf life.

“The challenge there, with the older light sets, is you really need to replace all the lamps to have the set looking [right] again, and they’re hard to find,” he said.

DeCosmo said the majority of their customers have pre-lit, artificial trees and some 6.5 million people have more than one tree in their home.

Ulta-Lit started out in 1996 selling pre-lit trees, but its LightKeeper invention eight years later has become the focus.

Customers with questions can call the company’s hotline from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week, between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve at 888-858-2548.
