(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — After a failed attempt one month ago, an ultra marathoner embarked on another attempt to swim across Lake Michigan.

Jim Dreyer’s previous attempt to swim from Bradford Beach in Milwaukee to Grand Haven City Beach in his Michigan hometown ended after nine hours due to the weather, which led his escort boat off course.

In the intervening weeks he marked the 25th anniversary of his successful swim across Lake Michigan, and he turned 60.

This time, Dreyer — whose nickname is “the Shark” — plans to pull a supply dinghy for the entire 82.5 miles across the lake while wearing smart goggles that will allow him to see his course and location.

He wrote on social media that he feels like Columbus or Magellan as he embarks on the trip, which is also a fundraiser for local chapters of the Coast Guard’s Petty Officers Association.

Dreyer hopes to complete the swim in about 60 hours.
