(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- President Biden has renewed his promise to keep U.S. Steel an American-owned company.
The president says he's called on the Justice Department to take a closer look at the nearly $15 billion proposed merger of U.S. Steel with Japan's Nippon Steel.
The deal also requires the approval of the federal government's Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States.
Mark Lash is president of Local 1066 of the United Steelworkers Union, which represents some of the workers at U.S. Steel's Gary Works in Northwest Indiana.
Lash said he's concerned about what will happen to the steel mill and the workers he represents, if the merger goes ahead, despite the President's promises.
“Everything we hear from Nippon’s attorneys and US Steel’s attorneys is that the sale is proceeding,” he said.
