CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The University of Chicago broke ground today on an $815 million Cancer Care and Research Pavilion.

The University President, Paul Alivisatos, said there is nothing like what they’re building by combining treatment and research.

Tom Jackiewicz, the president of the University of Chicago Health System also said the center will be "one of a kind."

"We look to truly transform how we deliver cancer care and treatment," he added.

Dr. Kunle Odunsi is the Director of the university’s Comprehensive Cancer Center.

"To say that I'm excited about this day would be an understatement," he said. "My colleagues and I are determined to make a bigger impact in the field of cancer through this new cancer care and research pavilion."

The seven-story, 575,000 square foot facility is expected to be complete in 2027.
