(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — In a December rarity, Klein Creek Golf Club in west suburban Winfield was packed with 150 golfers on Wednesday.

Normally the season ends Dec. 1, but the unseasonably warm weather kept the golf course open an extra two weeks.

“We've been relatively dry, so we've been able to keep the course open without any damage to the turf from the golf carts or foot traffic,” General Manager Brian Tulk said.

While he appreciates the extra off-season revenue, Tulk said the unprecedented number of tee times created a staffing challenge.

“All of our staff is laid off for the winter, and we had to pull a couple out of retirement to come help us out today,” he added.

Those on the course Wednesday afternoon said they were thrilled with the warm weather and fast greens.

“Just feels good getting out with the boys, having some fun,” said Woodridge resident Tom Gentine.

Geoff Fishwyck tells WBBM Newsradio it was a last-minute decision for him and his nephew to hit the links.

“There's no planning on playing on Dec. 15,” said Fishwyck. “I got my Florida clubs with me only because they're way later than my usual clubs.”

Klein Creek plans to remain open to golfers as long as weather permits.
