BARTLETT, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A red fox from Bartlett that’s gained a following on social media of about 2,000 people after getting a piece of drain pipe stuck around his neck is almost free of the necklace.
Freddy the Fox and his mate, Fiona, have been photographed and videotaped for more than a year.
And those who follow them say what had been an eight-inch piece of flexible drain pipe around Freddy’s neck is now little more than a sliver of a collar.
Vicki Weiland, director of Kane Area Rehabilitation and Education for Wildlife, said his pups have been chewing at it.
Efforts to capture the fox to remove the pipe proved impossible.
He’s too smart, Weiland said. Bartlett resident Larry Paxson, who lives near the den, started the Facebook page, “Find Freddy the Fox.”
He told the Daily Herald there’s no longer a reason to try to capture him. "It's barely even the size of a collar," Paxon said referring to the drain pipe around Freddy's neck.
"It's more like a necklace. It's so unobtrusive at this point we don't think there's a need to try and help get it off anymore."
Weiland said it’s been fun to watch how Freddy brought so many people together.
