(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Central Florida theme parks are closed due to Hurricane Ian. The theme parks at Walt Disney World and Universal Studios in Orlando are shut down and guests are urged to shelter in place in their hotels.
While storm surge isn't a problem in Central Florida, high winds and heavy rains pose a threat. A number of trees were uprooted by Hurricane Dorian when it hit Walt Disney World in 2017.
Cindy Richards, editor of the Traveling Mom in Chicago, told the WBBM Noon Business Hour on Wednesday that hotels are the safest spot for people who were unable to leave town ahead of the storm.
"Staying in a hotel room, staying in your condo, wherever you are staying down there, that's really the answer. I hope that by now, you have bought some water, packed in some snacks, and are ready to hunker down for the next 24 hours," Richards said.
Pictures posted to social media from Disney World hotels show a full range of indoor activities, so that guests don't have to spend all of their time thinking about the approaching storm.
"They're not going to leave people in their rooms cowering in a corner. They're going to do what they can to distract the kids and to keep everybody calm and entertained as long as they can," Richards said.
