Valparaiso University student dies after stabbing attack at fitness center

VALPARASIO, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Valparaiso University student that was stabbed at a fitness center last month has died.

Varun Raj Pucha was seated in a massage chair on October 29 at the Planet Fitness club at 1270 Strongbow Center Drive in Valparaiso, Indiana when Jordan Andrade, 24 came into the room and stabbed him, according to police.

The university announced his death in a Facebook post on Wednesday and offered condolences to Pucha's family.

Andrade was initially charged with Attempted Murder and Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon, but now the charges have been amended to murder, according to a news release from the City of Valparaiso. It was revealed in court that Andrade is on medication used to treat mental illness.

“Our hearts go out to Varun’s family and friends in this heartbreaking loss," said Valparaiso Mayor Matt Murphy in a statement. "The Valparaiso community has been shocked by this senseless tragedy and is united in support for this young man and his family."

Pucha, who was from Hvderabad, India was pursuing a graduate degree in Information Technology. The university will host a service of remembrance and memorial for Pucha on November 19.
