(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Two vehicles broke through the ice on Cedar Lake in Lake County, Indiana Sunday afternoon.

Police say two UTVs broke through the ice and sank on Cedar Lake.

It happened close to Potawatomi Park and Meyer Manor while the Cedar Lake ice races were happening, police say the incidents occurred far from the racing area.

While Cedar Lake attracts a lot of ice racers and spectators, police say some vehicles were either too heavy or strayed beyond the designated area deemed safe by race officials.

In the first incident, a father and son escaped while the UTV sank. In a second incident, the driver fled the scene in another UTV.

Both the vehicles sank and froze in the lake.

Police say this points out the "dangers of being on the ice, especially with heavy vehicles" and reminds those who have off-road vehicles that they must have them registered on property other than their own.

Police are asking for help identifying the operator of the second UTV, who fled the scene.
