(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The four dozen people who were shot during the Highland Park 4th of July Parade will be able to attend the whole murder trial of the man charged - even if they’re going to testify.
Judge Victoria Rossetti pointed to part of the state’s Crime Victims Bill of Rights in her decision. She sided with prosecutors in finding the victims’ statements to the court about what happened to them and their injuries would not be materially affected by hearing other testimony.
Attorney Antonio Romanucci represents some of the victims and applauded the decision that he says will give them a choice.
“If they want to have the cathartic experience of sitting through the trial and making sure and having the transparency of accountability, then that's their decision,” Romanucci said.
The judge also ruled that victims will be able to bring a support person with them.
“The judge's decision today means that the victims in this case will be able to sit through the entire trial and what I said, that is a choice that they will have as opposed to not having a choice.”
Jury selection in the case starts on Monday, with the judge reminding Robert Crimo III that it will go on whether or not he’s here. The 24-year-old has skipped other hearings.
He has pleaded not guilty to murdering seven people and wounding dozens of others in the 2022 shooting. He’s been charged with more than 100 felony counts.
