(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The Illinois State Police has released video of an incident earlier this this week during which a motorist was fatally shot and a state trooper was wounded in Southern Illinois.

Police stopped to assist with a stranded car on I-64 early Tuesday near milepost 72 in Jefferson County. The occupants -- 23-year-old Brandon Griffith and his 31-year-old wife, Christine Santos, from Albuquerque, New Mexico -- gave different names three times.

When police obtained the real identities, they learned both had felony warrants for weapons charges in New Mexico. The nearly released video shows a struggle between Griffith and two troopers, and one officer uses a taser on the man.

Griffith reaches into the back passenger seat and pulls out a gun, firing once. A wounded trooper falls to the ground. The second trooper fires four times times, fatally wounding Griffith.

The wounded trooper is recovering. An investigation continues.
