(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Purdue University and the coroner in Bloomington, Indiana felt the need to debunk a story that’s been shared thousands of times on Facebook.
The post claimed that Purdue scientists said a decapitated human body found in Lake Monroe was the result of an attack by a “giant snapping turtle.”
The post went on to say a Purdue biologist, Dr. Eric Paddlejack, determined the killer turtle is 9 feet in diameter and 300 years old.
Not only is there no giant killer turtle, there is no Dr. Paddlejack.
The Monroe County coroner's office tried to set the record straight:
“There have been no remains found, no giant snapping turtle found and I am only assuming someone wanted to get their 10 minutes of Facebook fame by making up such a story.”
The DNR joined in the debunking response and added, “While we’re here – nope, we did not release rattlesnakes from helicopters.”
