WAUKEGAN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Financial troubles have forced the layoffs of dozens of staffers at a north suburban hospital.

Vista Health System President Kevin Spiegel announced the layoffs of nearly 70 employees of Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.

The layoffs are supposed to last about six weeks.

Spiegel said Vista Health System is applying for safety net status, which would put the hospital in line for extra government money.

Spiegel said Vista has had some significant economic challenges over the years, largely due to the hospital’s commitment to serve a community facing adverse health, social and financial challenges.
