(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A weather expert at Northern Illinois University says the Chicago area is at greater risk of extremely severe storms for at least the next week.
Victor Gensini, a professor of meteorology, on Wednesday said a jet stream from Canada, hot temperatures and high humidity create what he calls a "ring of fire."
He says that greatly increases the risk of a weather phenomenon known as a "derecho," which can produce hurricane-strength, straight-line winds that can knock down trees and severely damage buildings.
He stresses derechos are very difficult to predict.
At least through the middle of next week, people should be ready for very severe conditions when storms pass through, Gensini said.
