(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – If early voting numbers are any indication, Chicago could be in store for a busy election day, one official says.

The latest numbers on Monday showed more than 134,000 Chicagoans had already voted early, while more than than 100,000 mail-in ballots had been returned.

Another roughly 100,000 mail-in ballots still had not been returned, Chicago Board of Elections Chairwoman Marisel Hernandez said.

Still, she's expecting high turnout overall.

“People realize how important this election is, on various levels,” she said. “I do think people are going to come out, and I think we are going to beat the 2018 numbers.”

In the 2018 midterm elections, Chicago voter turnout was more than 56% -- the highest turnout for that cycle in decades.
