(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Ahead of World Water Day on Monday, a contest is encouraging people in the Chicago area to help conserve 1 million gallons of water.
Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner Josina Morita is leading the Million Gallon Challenge, in which people can learn about easy ways to conserve water.
She says it's not just about using less water, but understanding how water is used to produce and transport many of the things we buy and eat.
“There are simple, easy things you can do, like eating chicken or salmon or vegetables instead of beef for one meal, that can save 500 gallons of water,” Morita said. “Eatings peanuts instead of almonds can help us save 1,000 gallons of water.
“Not buying that extra blouse that maybe you don’t need, especially during quarantine, can save 1,000 gallons of water.”
