CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Wauconda police are going pink in a big way.
They’ve worn pink badges before, and now, Wauconda police have turned a usually black unmarked squad car pink. Sgt. Heather Cognac said it’s a high-visibility way to promote awareness and remind people to get checkups.
“We, as a police department, have a unique opportunity to bring awareness to certain things, and this is the perfect way to do it, with the squad car,” Cognac said. “It’s out and about.”
She said they worked with a local graphic design company, which donated its time to transform the SUV that will be driven by officers during their regular shifts.
“I think, when you look at the statistics for breast cancer, you see great strides when people do get their annual exams, and so I think it’s a way to kind of remind people, ‘Hey, you still need to go do this,’” Cognac said.
The Susan G. Komen organization estimates there will be more than 287,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer in U.S. women, and over 43,000 new breast cancer deaths in 2022.
The pink squad car will be out patrolling Wauconda during the whole month of October.
