(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Rockford’s welcome sign is now a flashpoint for debate at City Hall.
Rockford's colorful “All People Are Welcome” sign is on East State Street and I-90 and has been standing since 2019, but some worry it sends the wrong message.
Republican 3rd Ward Alderman Chad Tuneberg says some of his constituents question whether it makes Rockford a sanctuary city.
“From out of this community, out of this country, or has resided in this community for 50 years, grew up in this community – my constituents number one issue, bar none, is crime.”
He questioned the approval process for the sign.
“And I don't want criminals in Rockford. I don't care where they're from.”
Activists packed Monday's council meeting, defending the sign as a symbol of the city's immigrant roots.
“I just can't believe that we're having this conversation in the way that we are, but I don't believe that anybody wants to see this sign go anywhere. I think they love it just the way that it is,” 12th Ward Democratic Alderman Gina Meeks said.
The Planning and Development Committee voted 4 to nothing to keep the sign. The debate now moves to the full city council on March 3.
