A man is facing a list of charges after a police officer stopping in for a drink thwarts a West Chicago gas station holdup.
43-year-old Filip Simonovic faces felony counts of attempted armed robbery with a firearm, unlawful possession of a weapon and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon as well as misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol and transportation of open alcohol by a driver.
The DuPage County state's attorney's office says a West Chicago police officer went into the Thornton's Gas station on Route 59 early Tuesday to buy a drink.
As he approached the counter, the clerk indicated that Simonovic had pointed a gun at him.
It is alleged that as the clerk was ringing up cigarettes for Simonovic, the suspect pulled out a black handgun, racked it and told the clerk "don't do anything stupid" before demanding money.
Officers later found two handguns on Simonovic, and discovered he was wearing body armor underneath a button-up shirt.
More guns and an open container of alcohol were also found in his car.
It is further alleged that Simonovic's Blood Alcohol Content was .147 when he was taken into custody.
Simonovic's next court appearance is scheduled for June 23, 2025.
