CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Halloween shopping in 2023 is expected to top last year.

Americans spent about $10 billion dollars last Halloween season. Kit Thompson is the manager at the locally-owned Chicago Costume.

She told WBBM us that for popular costumes like Mario, Spiderman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, time is quickly running out as well as for Barbie, this year’s most in demand costume.

"If you're looking for a very specific piece that you're interested in or a brand name Barbie costume, you're gonna wanna get that soon," Thompson advised.

"Those are the ones selling out the quickest."

She also expects an increase in elaborate DIY costumes this year, which Thompson said locally-owned year round shops like Chicago Costume are well equipped to handle with no limit on creativity.

"Nothing is too strange here, because in addition to the packaged costumes, we've got all the pieces. We have some really good professional quality stage makeup that's not too expensive."
