
CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago representatives have outlined street closures that will take place before, during and after the NASCAR Chicago Street Race event.
The race, which will feature 12 turns around a 2.2-mile circuit centered around Grant Park, will take place on July 1 – 2, but the first parking restriction will begin on June 2 at 6 a.m. along Columbus Drive between Jackson and Balbo Drives.
City officials said the most significant street closures will begin June 25, when Columbus Drive will be closed between Jackson Boulevard and Roosevelt Road. In the days following, street closures will include parts of DuSable Lake Shore Drive, Michigan Avenue and Roosevelt Road.
On June 10, Ida B. Wells Drive will close east of Michigan Avenue starting at 12:01 a.m., as crews begin constructing the race's main viewing areas.
Between June 17 – 25, officials said there will be temporary road closures along the race route will take place as crews put up track walls. The only exception to the those temporary closures will be Balbo Drive, which will close at 6 a.m. on June 19 from Michigan Avenue to DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
For race weekend, northbound DuSable Lake Shore Drive will close on July 1 at 4 a.m. between McFetridge Drive and Randolph Street. Officials said it will reopen on July 2.
Organizers said everything will be cleared by July 15.
The museum campus and Maggie Daley Park "will remain open and accessible throughout the event," city officials said.
In a press release, the city said ticket sales are going “very well,” and that there have been ticket buyers from 48 states and 12 countries.
