Where to celebrate Juneteenth in and around Chicago in 2024

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Today is Juneteenth and celebrations and events are planned to commemorate the holiday that recognizes the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.

Throughout the Chicago area, there will be no shortage of festivities.

Below, find a list of Juneteenth activities that are worth checking out.

Homewood-Flossmoor Juneteenth Parade

Following last weekend's festival, the morning parade will go from Western Avenue Elementary, 940 Western Ave., to Parker Junior High, 2810 School St.

When: June 19, 9 a.m.
Where: Steps off at Western Avenue Elementary, 940 Western Ave., to Parker Junior High, 2810 School St., Flossmoor.
Price: $10 for adults; $5 for kids ages 3 – 17

Juneteenth Youth Summit

The morning program provides a growth opportunity for emerging leaders in middle school, high schools and college, offering workshops on  college planning, financial preparation and interacting with police.

When: June 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Where: North Island Center, 8 E. Galena Blvd., Aurora

Juneteenth 2024 Performances

The all-day music event celebrates Black creativity and expression. The DuSable Museum will feature a vast array of blues and R&B artists, including Glenn Jones, A Patch of Blues as well as DJ Sam BLK Soldier.

When: June 19, from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Where:  The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, 740 East 56th Place, Chicago

Thank You Chicago Juneteenth Market

The pop-up market showcases thirty local Black vendors, selling food, clothing, candles and art.

When: Monday, June 19, from 2 – 7 p.m.
Where: The Promontory, 5311 S Lake Park Ave., Chicago
Price: Admission is free

Juneteenth Freedom Market

Organized by Refine Collective, the fourth annual fair is an all-ages celebration of Black creativity and entrepreneurship, featuring more than 50 local Black-owned businesses. In addition to a bustling homegoods and beauty products market, there will be live music and performances by the 40 + Double Dutch Club.

When: Wednesday, June 19, from 4 – 10 p.m.
Where: The Salt Shed (outdoor area), 1357 N. Elston Ave., Chicago
Price: RSVP is free, but $10 donation is suggested
