CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The White Sox have fired manager Pedro Grifol.

The club announced the move in a post to social media this morning.

“As we all recognize, our team’s performance this season has been disappointing on many levels,” said White Sox General Manager Chris Getz in a statement.”Despite the on-field struggles and lack of success, we appreciate the effort and professionalism Pedro and the staff brought to the ballpark every day. These two seasons have been very challenging. Unfortunately, the results were not there, and a change is necessary as we look to our future and the development of a new energy around the team.”

The dismissal comes as the Sox are in the midst of a historically futile season, earning a 28-89 record through the first 117 games and most recently losing an American League record 21 games in a row.

Grifol was in the midst of his second season as skipper. He was hired in November of 2022 after having spent nearly a decade with the Kansas City Royals organization as an instructor and coach.

Under Grifol, the White Sox compiled 89-190 record.

The organization has named Grady Sizemore as the interim manager. The 10-year major leaguer primarily played for AL Central rival in Cleveland. He retired from playing in 2015.

This season, Sizemore had been the outfield and baserunning coach for the White Sox.

In addition to Grifol, the club dismissed three other coaches- bench coach Charlie Montoyo, third base coach Eddie Rodriguez, and assistant hitting coach Mike Tosar.

For rest of the season, the Sox have hired Doug Sisson as a bench coach, Justin Jirschele as third base coach and Mike Gellinger as assistant hitting coach.

In their morning statement, the White Sox said the search will begin immediately, they expect to announce a replacement after the completion of the 2024 season.
