CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — White Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet and his wife Rachel made a special appearance at a Garrett’s Popcorn Shop on Michigan Avenue on Tuesday morning.

The pair spent an hour behind the counter at the downtown shop for Garrett Popcorn’s “Scoop for a Cause” campaign, from which a portion of the sales will benefit Chicago White Sox Charities. The All-Star pitcher was asked what was more difficult: pitching or scooping popcorn.

“So far, scooping popcorn,” said Crochet. “I can’t stop overfilling the bags. I need to get my scoops down.”

Cesar Campos said he’s visiting Chicago from Mexico and is going to his first White Sox game Wednesday. Campos told WBBM that when he planned a trip to Garrett’s Popcorn, he had no idea a White Sox player would be serving him his food.

“This is amazing that I’m just walking around, getting to know Chicago, and I can meet a player — that’s awesome, really,” Campos said. “This is perfect for my first visit to Chicago.”

Regena Jones was visiting Chicago from Indianapolis for a business meeting.

Jones isn’t a baseball fan but said a trip to Garrett’s Popcorn is a must whenever she’s in the city.

“I would like to thank [Crochet] for this wonderful bag and for my wonderful popcorn, because as I get in the car, it’s going to be gone,” she said.

Fans who missed Crochet and his wife on Tuesday will have another chance on Thursday to see some White Sox legends behind the counter at 173 N. Michigan Ave.

Former left fielder Ron Kittle and Hall of Fame inductee Harold Baines will be there from 3 – 4 p.m.

The “Scoop for a Cause” campaign is part of Garrett’s Popcorn’s 75th anniversary celebration.
