CHICAGO (WBBM Newsradio) – Chicago White Sox amateur scouting director Mike Shirley has resigned amid an internal investigation into allegations that he made inappropriate racial and sexist comments, according to The Athletic.
Shirley was placed on administrative leave after the organization received an anonymous complaint about his conduct at the Area Code Games in Long Beach, California, last month. The annual event showcases about 200 high school baseball players.
The Athletic reports the White Sox human resources department interviewed members of the amateur scouting staff as part of its investigation. The findings have not been disclosed.
A team spokesperson confirmed Shirley’s resignation Saturday. The White Sox declined further comment, and Shirley did not respond to The Athletic’s requests for comment.
Shirley, 56, became the team’s amateur scouting director in 2019 after holding several other scouting positions with the organization. During his tenure, the White Sox drafted players including Garrett Crochet, Colson Montgomery and Hagen Smith.
