DEKALB, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- DeKalb Police say it appears to be an innocent prank, but people want to know who’s behind the cheese.

Social media posts claim there’s a “cheese vandal” in DeKalb - someone putting slices of cheese on cars in the middle of the night.

One person wrote on social media, "it must be a Muenster behind the prank. Someone Gouda got hurt."

Another wrote:  krafty.

A woman said she’s never laughed so hard, and another said "Damn Packers fan."

It reminded someone of what they called a “sting of these in Maple Park last year.”

People have even called police after waking to find single slices of cheese on their cars.

Police Commander Jason Leverton told the Daily Chronicle the department has had five or six calls about the "cheese vandal" leaving cheese slices on cars. He said the incidents have appeared to happen overnight.

Leverton said there’s a difference between vandalism and a prank, and that the DeKalb Police Department is classifying these incidents as pranks than acts of vandalism.

“A prank really does not cause any permanent damage,” Leverton said.

And since cheese biodegrades, Leverton said it’s not considered littering either.

“But it seems like a random prank occurring throughout town,” he said.

As of Thursday night, no one has been caught.
