CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Whole Foods store that opened to great fanfare six years ago on 63rd Street in the Englewood neighborhood is closing tomorrow. It's been crowded with shoppers snapping up bargain groceries.
Whole Foods, which was bought by Amazon in 2017, announced the closure of the Englewood store in April, citing “performance and growth potential.”
Cecil Demello, the executive Director of an organization called Teamwork Englewood, was the Community Engagement Specialist for the store when it opened in 2016.
"From what I understood, this project was never about the bottom line, but bringing healthy food access to this community," she said.
There’s an Aldi a few blocks away and it appears there will be another grocery store moving into the Englewood space, but nothing has been announced.
Meantime, shoppers have been taking advantage of a half-price sale on most items.
