This week's Green Sense Minute features master electrician Nick Rubino, owner of Sparkie Electric, who discusses commercial and residential backup power options for severe weather.
"Heavy rains and floods that can definitely knock out your solar panels. So, that's where battery power comes in," said Rubino.
Rubino is a master electrician who says every system should have a backup plan.
"Battery power gets rid of the fluctuations in weather, and clouds and sunshine," Rubino said. "So, your battery system is meant primarily to to get any fluctuation out of the solar system. And then, you have floods and hurricanes, tornadoes, whatever, that actually can knock out your gas generator system because if the gas grids are knocked out, those generators are practically useless. So, battery backups pretty much been the way to go now."
Nick explained where to put the battery backups.
"Put them in a dry area, at least a couple feet above ground level. I mean, they produce no noise, really, and they put out a little bit of heat. So, I think in your attic might be a good spot," he said.
