Wife of disgraced Fox Lake police official pleads guilty on felony charges

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – It's a guilty plea from Melodie Gliniewicz on a felony charge of deceptive practices.

Melodie Gliniewicz, the widow of a disgraced Fox Lake police official, pleaded guilty Friday morning, ending six years of court proceedings and making a trial scheduled for next week unnecessary.

Lake County prosecutors said Melodie Gliniewicz and her husband, Fox Lake police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz, worked together to steal money from the Fox Lake Youth Explorers program. The two were accused of using that money on movie tickets, vacations and other personal expenses.

Joe Gliniewicz's 2015 death received national attention in which he made it appear that he was shot by armed suspects, but in reality took his own life.

In a statement, Lake County State's Attorney Eric Reinhardt said of Melodie Gliniewicz, "her guilt is established, which is the goal of the trial."

Sentencing is now set for April 12.
