(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Will County Coroner’s Office said hunters found skeletal remains in November of 1974 near Interstate 55 and Route 6.

The remains were eventually buried and the case went cold. They were exhumed in 1993 for analysis, but nothing came of that.

The case was not forgotten when the coroner’s office formed a cold case unit in 2009.
A DNA profile was developed, as was a facial reconstruction, but still nothing.

Last year, the coroner’s office partnered with a Texas company, Othram Inc., which submitted a DNA profile to Family Tree DNA and ultimately a match was found.

Investigators interviewed various people from Washington, Hawaii, Georgia, and Florida and after additional DNA profiling and genealogy studies located who they believed to be the nephew of the unknown  man.

The nephew told investigators his uncle disappeared in 1971 or 1972. He’s now identified as Donald M. Rosek, who lived in Harvey and was believed to have been in the Army.
