CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Elections officials say they want to repeat the success of the United Center serving as a so-called Super Site for voting on Election Day, but they’ll need the state legislature’s help.
On Election Day, more than 1,900 people from around the city voted at the United Center, more than twice as many as anywhere else. Some took “I Voted” selfies with the Michael Jordan statue, and there were snacks and music.
"Not only were you able to cast your ballot, but you did it in the presence of Michael Jordan. What more could you want?"
Chicago Election Board chairwoman Marisel Hernandez said it was something else.
"It was just unbelievable. It was overwhelming, and I knew that it was going to be a great experience for everyone," she said.
Officials want to do this again, but Hernandez said it was a special state law passed in June that allowed such a site like this on Election Day.
"In order for us to be able to use the United Center again, the state legislature will have to enact another law allowing us to do this," she said.
She said they’re going to lobby hard, because that same law also allowed for drop boxes, and officials really want to keep that going as well. The drop boxes were for people to deposit their mail-in votes, just to be sure they were received.
