CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Mayoral candidate Willie Wilson says security on the CTA is worse than a failure and he says he can do better.

Wilson took a bus downtown from the West Side and met with reporters here near the “El” tracks at State and Lake to discuss his plan for security on public transit.

“I haven’t seen a politician yet, get on the bus or the subway and to see what kind of experience that Chicago people go through, I have not seen that yet.

“I think you need to take the handcuffs off the police and put them on the crook and you probably need to take the handcuffs off them and put them on the elected officials too,” Wilson said.

Because, he said, they’re out of touch, clearly talking about the current holder of the office on the fifth floor at City Hall.

Wilson was asked to give a grade for how things are today.

“What grade would I give them? I think they’re 26 letters in the ABCs (alphabet) right? It wouldn’t even fit,” Wilson exclaimed.

He said he would add police officers and have conductors on all trains.

“I’d put the number at 300, but I would hire private armed-security,” Wilson added.

He said it may take a thousand and does not see having armed private guards as a risk, explaining, he himself has a conceal and carry permit. Wilson said he wasn’t carrying on the bus.

“You must take care of the citizen at all cost,” said Wilson.

Wilson said he'd like to see crimes committed on public transit prosecuted federally. Ultimately, he said he’d find the money to fund all of this.
