WINNETKA, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Winnetka Park District Board is increasing security following a drowning at the closed Elder Lane Beach.

The beach has been closed for about four years, because it’s considered unsafe. There’s exposed wire mesh that was installed to retain the bluffs and prevent erosion.

Parks Superintendent Costa Kutulas said more fencing and more signs are going up.

"This does not eliminate somebody traversing the beach and gaining access from the North. If they were traversing along Lake Michigan or the south, They're coming in as well," he stressed.

"We don't have the ability to create those boundaries without going under current regulations with the IDNR."

The Superintendent of Recreation Kyle Berg said making improvements and getting the beach back open would be more beneficial than trying to keep people out. That is the ultimate goal.
