WINNETKA (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Rescue crews are searching for a man in his 20s who disappeared while in Lake Michigan near Elder Lane Beach.
Winnetka Fire Chief John Ripka said firefighters, along with the U.S. Coast Guard were called to the lakefront at 299 Sheridan Road, a little after 2 a.m., for a report of a missing swimmer. Three men had jumped off a pier in the area, and only two resurfaced from the water, leading to a large emergency presence.
Due to high waves, ranging from 6 to 8-feet high, rescue crews have had to conduct their search from the shore.
A Beach Hazard Statement had been in place yesterday and will remain in effect until 10 p.m. tonight.
The search remains ongoing. As of 6 a.m., it has turned into a recovery mission.
WBBM reporter Carolina Garibay contributed to this report.
