(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A man from Wisconsin wants to do his part to save a distinctive insect.
Jack Voight is the president of the Butterfly Gardens of Wisconsin in Appleton. He said he wants his state to name the monarch butterfly as the state's official butterfly.
The monarch is the official insect of the state of Illinois.
His effort is part of a larger push to raise awareness of the steep decline in the monarch butterfly population. He said monarchs are running out of native plants on which to lay eggs. Land development is partly to blame.
A bill to make the monarch the official butterfly of Wisconsin has been introduced in that state’s senate.
