Ridglan Farms in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin, is ending operations after nearly 60 years of breeding thousands of beagles for biomedical research.

The final 155 beagles were released from Ridglan to Big Dog Ranch Rescue Wednesday to undergo veterinary evaluations and care before being placed in new homes.

Ridglan agreed to sell its beagles to animal welfare groups after backlash from animal rights activists, who had urged officials to investigate animal abuse concerns at the breeding facility for years.

To avoid prosecution, Ridglan agreed to surrender its state breeding license by July 1, 2026.

Big Ranch Rescue said it has now rescued and relocated 2,115 beagles from Ridglan since April 29.
