CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 23-year-old woman is accused of suffocating her newborn son and burying him in the backyard of her home in Leyden Township last fall.

Alvory C. Chavez Ramos, 23, gave birth to the baby in a bathtub at a residence in the 900 block of Prater Avenue in unincorporated Leyden Township sometime between Oct. 31 and Nov. 30 last year, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office said.

When the baby began to cry, she allegedly suffocated him, by covering his nose and mouth, because she didn't want relatives to discover the baby. After the child stopped moving, Chavez Ramos placed him in a plastic bag and buried him in the backyard, authorities said.

Sheriff's police launched an investigation that included DNA testing after the remains were found in May 2021. Chavez Ramos was arrested over the weekend and faces a charge of first-degree murder.

“After she was issued her Miranda Rights, Chavez Ramos told Sheriff’s Police detectives she tried to conceal her pregnancy from her family, because she did not want them to be angry with her,” a news release from the sheriff’s office said.

Chavez Ramos, who most recently lived in unincorporated Franklin Park, was ordered held on $950,000 bond, the sheriff's office said.
