Woman behind Pride Parade in Buffalo Grove pushes village to proclaim June as Pride Month, fly flag

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The woman behind the original Gay Pride Parade in Buffalo Grove had another ask of the suburb’s village board Tuesday night.

Carolyn Pinta is director of a non-profit that runs BG Pride and on Tuesday night she made two requests of the Buffalo Grove Village Board. One, for a proclamation on June 1 declaring Pride Month in the suburb.

Second: "BG Pride would like to see the pride flag fly under the American flag at Village Hall for the month of June," Pinta said.

"I understand the difficulties of flying the flag. Why should the pride flag fly in June, but a flag for breast cancer awareness not fly in October, or a flag to honor our police officers in January around National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day? The answer is simple. The pride flag should not be the only flag to fly."

Pinta said that while other groups should be able to fly flags outside Village Hall, "I understand a major concern would be that groups that do not represent good such as Nazis or white supremacists would apply to fly the flag. But, I don’t really see that as an issue, because these groups, of course, would have to apply with you the village board."

The request will be examined by village staff and its attorney.

Carolyn Pinta was behind the effort to fly the Pride flag outside Lake County government offices in June.
