(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — It’s not every day you come face to face with a large wild animal, but Dawn Keller did in Barrington.

In video posted to social media over the weekend, the founder of Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation aided a buck whose antlers had become stuck in a rope swing that was hanging from a large tree.

To eventually free the buck, Keller had to get very close to help untangle and free the distressed animal.

“What I needed to do was get him to walk around the tree from which the rope was hanging,” Keller said. “His adrenaline was quite high, so it was a dangerous situation.”

Responders administered three rounds of anesthetic to get the buck groggy enough so that he could be safely helped.

The animal was eventually freed, treated and released, and now all Keller can do is hope for the best.

“It’s not like we can take him back to our center and treat him. He would almost certainly die under that scenario. So, as soon as we reverse the anesthetic, he’s on his own. Once we reversed it, he walked off quite alert and looked quite good.”

Despite working with less volunteers and more animals during the pandemic, Keller said it still feels good to help whenever they can.
