(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Women should get regular mammograms at a younger age, a panel of medical experts recommends.
The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force says women of all racial and ethnic backgrounds who are at average risk for breast cancer should start getting mammograms at age 40 instead of 50.
Loyola Medicine Dr. Josephine Dlugopolski said in the long run it will lead to less invasive treatment and better outcomes. Breast cancer is showing up in younger women, she said.
Some women might still be hesitant to get a mammogram because they think it will hurt or lead to painful tests or the worst-case scenario of a cancer diagnosis, she said.
But in the long run getting mammograms earlier will lead to less invasive treatment and better outcomes, she adds.
