(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Bensonville police officer is out of the hospital six weeks after being shot during a domestic disturbance call.

Steven Kotlewski still must use crutches or a wheelchair to get around, so he is staying at his in-law’s one-story home in Roselle.

That’s where a crowd of friends, fellow Bensonville officers and others stood Saturday to celebrate his release from a Wheaton rehabilitation center.

Seeing all the well-wishers, American flags and Chicago police bagpipe players, Officer Kotlewski said he was too happy to cry.

Holding his pug Stabler — named after a “Law and Order” detective, he told reporters he’d like to go back on patrol but it depends on if he can meet the physical requirements.

A 21-year-old man is charged with attempted murder in the Nov. 6 shooting that seriously wounded the officer.
